A Journey of Lifelong Learning and Advocacy

From Rural Saskatchewan to the Heart of Medicine Hat

There is a unique pride that comes from roots spread wide across the Canadian Prairies. My journey began in rural Saskatchewan, where open fields and clear skies inspired a boundless curiosity that would guide me through every chapter of my life. From the gentle hum of grain elevators to the vast stretches of golden canola swaying in the breeze, my childhood was shaped by the landscape and community spirit that define our country's heartland.

As the years unfolded, new horizons called. I set out from Saskatchewan and found myself living in the lush valleys and mountains of British Columbia, the vibrant communities of Ontario, and, in time, the welcoming arms of Alberta. Each province offered lessons and friendships, challenges and triumphs, adding layers to my understanding of Canada’s diverse tapestry.

For the past twenty years, I have made Medicine Hat my home—a city whose warmth matches the renowned prairie sun. Here, I have planted deep roots, found belonging, and cherished the unique character that sets our community apart. I am endlessly inspired by Medicine Hat’s blend of small-town heart and forward-thinking spirit, and I am proud to call it my own.

My career as a teacher spanned thirty-three years, a journey as rewarding as it was transformative. Each classroom became a world of possibility, each student a chance to spark curiosity and foster growth. I have always believed that learning is a lifelong adventure—not just for students, but for educators as well. Every lesson taught was matched by a lesson learned, and my commitment to innovation and passion for discovery never waned.

Even in retirement, my love of learning endures. I continue to seek out new challenges, approaching each with the same energy and creativity that marked my years in the classroom. Whether exploring fresh ideas, engaging in community projects, or championing new initiatives, I remain a devoted life-long learner.

Above all, I am a steadfast advocate for public education. I hold firmly to the belief that every child, no matter their background or circumstance, deserves the right to learn. Education is not just a privilege, but a powerful force for equity, opportunity, and hope. I am dedicated to ensuring that our public schools remain places of possibility, where imagination is nurtured, potential is realized, and the next generation is prepared to thrive.

My story is one of discovery and dedication, rooted in the Prairies and blossoming in Medicine Hat. As I look to the future, I do so with gratitude for the journey so far and hope for all the journeys still to come—a path paved with learning, advocacy, and the unwavering belief in the power of education to change lives.

"I can claim without a doubt that she has been the most influential educator I have ever known, and for that I am very grateful."--  Matthew Kutryk
